9 Packing Tips for Moving

Now that your house has sold and the closing is right around the corner, it’s time to start packing! Moving can be a daunting task to take on, but there are some things you can do to make it less stressful. It would be easier just to throw your things into boxes and call it a day, but if you want to ensure all your belongings make it to your new home in one piece, there are certain precautions you should take. Here are 9 packing tips to ensure you have a smooth move into your next home.

1. Declutter. If you’re planning on moving, get rid of anything that you don’t need or use. If you’re unsure about something, ask yourself if you have used the item in the past year. If not, you probably won’t need it in your new home! It’s best to save space for essential items only.

2. Assemble packing materials. Depending on what you have you may need boxes, packing paper, foam peanuts, bubble wrap, newspapers, and tape. And if you don’t have a marker around somewhere, you’ll need that, too!

3. Pack one room at a time. This makes packing easier and also saves time when you’re unpacking in your new home. Make sure to label the boxes for each room respectively.

4. Disassemble. Unhook electrical appliances, take nails out of walls and remove lightbulbs from lamps. Pieces of furniture like your bed frame and bookshelves should also be disassembled ahead of time since they’re heavier; this will ensure there aren’t any setbacks on move-out day.

5. Leave your non-breakables in drawers. Secure the drawers so that they don’t slide open or fall out with unbreakable items. This will save you time and money on extra boxes! Pro tip: you can also leave your clothes on hangers and cover them with plastic bags from the dry cleaners.

6. Label everything. When you have smaller items that can be easily misplaced, it’s best to keep everything organized in the box dedicated to the room they belong in. Label boxes with the room names and the important items inside so you know where to find everything.

7. Keep valuables on you. Don’t risk putting your valuables in boxes, especially if you’re hiring movers to help you out. Anything of worth should be within your reach and shouldn’t be trusted in the hands of anyone you don’t know. Keep them in the boxes or bags that will be traveling with you!

8. Rent the right truck size. Ask the truck agency about what truck will best suit your needs. Be wary of hiring a truck that’s too big, it’ll cause unnecessary spending and stress.

9. Protect your things. Plan to use moving blankets, furniture pads, and straps to keep belongings from shifting during the move – especially if you’re relocating somewhere farther away.
